The first Unilever site in the UK to introduce Every Can Counts is the company’s aerosol manufacturing facility in Leeds, the site employs 500 staff and is the largest aerosol production facility in Europe.
The site previously offered staff the facilities for plastic cup recycling and some paper recycling, but participation was low.
With the help of Every Can Counts, dedicated drinks can recycling points bins were introduced across the site.
In addition to collection containers, Every Can Counts supplied posters to promote recycling points and table talkers for the canteen and meeting area.
Results
The internal communications campaign achieved instant results, with staff not only starting to recycle drinks cans and but also using existing recycling facilities more frequently.
As a result contamination fell dramatically.
Staff also requested plastic bottle recycling, so suitable bins were provided.
The Leeds site is on course to collect over half a tonne of drinks cans in the programme’s first year – equivalent to 0.5kg per employee on site.
