West Midlands Fire Service adopted Every Can Counts in 2009, placing recycling boxes in every fire station, its headquarters and training centres.
With almost 2,500 staff across the service, Every Can Counts was seen as an effecitve approach to improving recycling, as it complemented existing waste management arrangements and internal promotions.
The programme fits with the Service’s Environment Team strategy, which includes initiaitves to ensure staff are committed to protecting the environment. As part of this strategy a network of Environmental Champions has been established, these are employees with the specific additional responsibility of promoting good practice to protect the environment.
