Recycling Champions

So you’ve decided to make Every Can Count in your workplace? Congratulations! Signing up to the scheme demonstrates a real commitment to sustainability and we are here to support you every step of the way.

Once you’ve set up your scheme, the next – and most important – task will be to explain it to staff. Having a ‘Recycling Champion’ on the ground to explain, motivate and inspire others to take part can help to embed recycling behaviour throughout any organisation.   Some of our larger partner organisations have recruited a whole team of champions who support each other or take charge of a particular department or building.

What makes a good champion?

A good recycling champion is committed to recycling (look for the person who reminds others to save energy by turning off lights and computers), enthusiastic, has great communication and motivational skills, and is able to coordinate activities. They hold the key to the successful launch and promotion of the company’s new recycling scheme and, once it’s up and running, will lead by example, using their boundless enthusiasm to encourage and remind others to embrace recycling, providing support and advice to those who are less willing to change their habits.

What happens next?

Once your champion is in place, involve them in all plans for launching and promoting your recycling scheme – enabling them to regularly share ideas and feedback will help your recycling programme to become established as quickly as possible.

Every Can Counts has a range of ideas and resources for Recycling Champions, including screensavers and wallpaper; posters to download, and a host of competition ideas and useful statistics. The Champion Ideas section of this website is full of advice, ideas and support for champions, so encourage them to visit it regularly for the latest news and information.
