3. Set up can recycling points

  • In staff canteens and break-out areas
  • Alongside existing recycling facilities

Spread the word

4. Present someone with the title of "Recycling Champion"

We recommend that you nominate a "champion" (or champions) to promote Every Can Counts. Not only can they help by motivating your staff to take environmentally friendly action, but they can also help you boost your bottom line and go greener.

Depending on the size of your organisation you may want to recruit a team of champions, giving them responsibility for a particular department or building

What makes a good champion?
The recycling champion is the person in your organisation who is committed to recycling and will help to motivate others to recycle more and waste less.
A good champion is enthusiastic, has great communication skills, the ability to motivate and the skills to coordinate activities and be credible at all levels of the organisation.

They hold the key to helping you successfully launch and promote your recycling scheme: They will lead by example, using their boundless enthusiasm to encourage others to embrace recycling and will provide support and advice to employees who are less willing to change.

Remember, it is not just directors and managers that affect your organisation's Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability policy, it's everyone! Make sure you have engaged all your employees for a successful Green Policy.

There might be an obvious candidate, someone who has already made their commitment to recycling known to you; this is your chance to help them make a difference and become directly involved in shaping your organisation's future policy.

Once you have your champion(s) in place establish a system for communicating with them and involve them in plans for launching and promoting your recycling scheme. Enabling them to regularly share ideas and feedback with you, and other champions, will help your recycling programme to become established as quickly as possible. The recycling champions section of this website is full of advice, ideas and support for champions so encourage them to visit it regularly for the latest news and information.

5. Hold a launch event

This could be a day or a week when you organise activities to promote drinks can recycling.

  • Put up a display in reception, the staff canteen or rest area. Use the downloadable resources to produce an eye-catching display.
  • As well as giving out information to colleagues you could run a competition. For more ideas visit our champion ideas section

6. Get help from other departments

  • Marketing - to put articles in the staff newsletters and emails, and to help with organising a launch event.
  • IT - to add information to the company website or intranet, to set up links to www.everycancounts.co.uk
  • Personnel - to put information in salary slips
  • Facilities management, or your recycling collection partner - to get information on how many cans have been collected.

7. Spread the word

Speak to your Facilities Management team, including the cleaners as they will all need to be aware of the Every Can Counts scheme. But dont stop there, equally important will be talking to your team.

With the help of the recycling champion(s), use the free resources to launch and promote Every Can Counts effectively. The resources include:

Poster artwork: these can be amended to include your company logo, recycling point information or contact details.
Screensavers and wallpapers: to give added visibility to the recycling programme.
Logos: so you can include Every Can Counts branding on your internal communicatioins materials.

8. Maintain momentum

Once you have Every Can Counts up and running and everyone is getting into the drinks can recycling habit, it's important to keep people motivated by keeping them informed of how well the scheme is going.

For example, make sure you're making full use of staff notice boards, in-house newsletters, your intranet, E-zines and events within your organisation. Check the Every Can Counts website regularly for the latest news, ideas and promotions to keep everyone recycling.

Encourage your Every Can Counts champion to give regular feedback on progress and to use the downloadable resources to support internal communication, competitions and promotions.
