ASDA set to expand successful programme

28/10/2009

Staff at 49 branches of ASDA have been making Every Can Count with such enthusiasm that the company is now planning to introduce the programme to all its 308 stores nationwide.

ASDA set to expand successful programmeA trial at branches in the North West of England, which began in June, saw drinks cans being collected in staffrooms and canteen areas and taken with other recyclable materials back to the regional distribution centre, as part of ASDA’s initiative to send zero waste to landfill by the end of 2010. The national rollout of Every Can Counts will form part of a major environmental programme which focuses on raising awareness and increasing colleague recycling – with an ultimate aim to divert all recyclable waste streams away from landfill.

The initiative has been communicated to colleagues using Every Can Counts promotional materials which have been incorporated into ASDA’s internal communication networks, including Everyone Matters TV, table talkers and team ‘huddles’.

Jonathan Wylie, Waste and Recycling Manager at ASDA, commented, “We are happy to be supporting the Every Can Counts scheme at ASDA. Feedback from staff surveys showed that they were keen to recycle at work because they are already recycling at home.”

“We believe it is important that we make it as easy as possible for our colleagues to recycle. The regional trial was a great success and we’re confident that this can be repeated when we roll out the programme to our other stores across the country.”
