Every Can Counts cleans up on the beach

28/10/2009

Bournemouth beachBournemouth's 4.5 million beach goers can now recycle drinks cans whilst enjoying the seaside. Bournemouth Council has installed six Every Can Counts outdoor can crushers along the seafront, and has rebranded its other can recycling bins as part of an effort to increase recycling of the 160 tonnes of rubbish that are generated on the seafront every year – equivalent to the weight of two ‘jumbo’ jets.

The council is the first local authority in the UK to use Every Can Counts in public areas. Bournemouth Councillor Robert Lawton said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for the public to recycle and look forward to seeing how Every Can Counts can help contribute towards making the beach a more enjoyable place for visitors and locals alike.

The launch of the new can crushers was helped by local radio station Heart FM, which ran a beach front promotion and a poster design competition. The five winning designs will be used by the Council to promote recycling in the coming months.
