Every Can Counts gets people recycling!

28/10/2009

Businesses, universities, hospitals and local authorities are among the many organisations that have joined the programme to provide better recycling facilities, and motivate staff and customers to recycle their drink cans when they are at work or out and about.

Every Can Counts gets people recyclingLaunched in October 2008, Every Can Counts is a unique partnership between the manufacturers of drinks cans (Beverage Can Makers Europe and UK Canmakers), the aluminium and steel packaging manufacturers and reprocessors and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). It aims to improve collection and recycling of the 42,000 tonnes of aluminium and steel drinks cans which are used outside the home every year – a major focus of the Government’s Waste Strategy (2007) and Packaging Strategy (2009).

Every Can Counts links businesses with a recycling service and provides a range of communications resources to help employers promote drinks can recycling. The programme is working with major national and regional waste management and recycling companies, including Save-a-Cup Recycling, Biffa and Severnside Recycling and Bywaters, who are offering the service to existing customers, and working with organisations who have been recruited to the programme. Although the programme has focused initially on the West Midlands it is already being rolled out nationwide by some companies, including leading supermarket ASDA. It is also encouraging holiday-makers to recycle on the south coast and a major programme will be launching in Wales before the end of the year.
