Bridgend makes Every Can Count towards a World Record
14/12/2009
Congratulations to the people of Bridgend, who saved enough drink cans to set a new World Record in November. The record attempt was a matter of town pride, as Bridgend had already held one record for the longest line of drinks cans, which it set back in 2006. But a year later it was beaten by an organisation in Singapore, so the challenge was on to bring the record back home.
Bridgend County Borough Council and local radio station 106.3 Bridge FM teamed up for the attempt to break the record, with local schools, colleges, businesses and clubs responding to the appeal to collect cans and donate them to the cause.
In all 106,300 cans (approx 1.5 tonnes) were collected and carefully lined up in Bridgend Recreation Centre, smashing the previous record of 90, 769 cans.
Bridgend County Council sustainable waste technician Angela Todd says: “The Bridge FM team did brilliant job encouraging the local community to get behind the campaign and save their cans. We're keen to ensure that all 100,000-plus empty drinks cans don't go to waste, and we're working with Nolan Recycling Ltd who will collect the aluminium and steel cans and send them for recycling."
She continues: "Within the Council we’re working with Every Can Counts to keep the recycling message fresh and exciting, and we hope everyone who contributed so brilliantly to the world record will keep recycling in the future!”
