This was the hottest and sunniest weekend of Every Can Counts’ festival season – thank you Devon!
We worked alongside the waste contractor More Bins at this lovely venue in Devon, enabling and encouraging more cans to be recycled. The crowd were certainly a great bunch and very receptive to our activities. We built a 3m high statue made from crushed drinks cans donated by willing festival goers who watched the statue grow over the course of the weekend.
We certainly got people thinking, and talking, about how many cans were being recycled. Not to mention encouraging them to bring us whole bags of cans from their tents in order to help us complete the statue. That’s real commitment.
In addition to building the statue we ran a kids competition which was both educational and fun, and allowed them the opportunity to win prizes of their own whilst at the same time keeping them busy.
Each can recycled saves energy and raw materials, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. For example recycling one tonne of aluminium cans saves 9 tonnes of CO2 emissions. So it’s fair to say that the can recycling activities over the course of the Festival made a significant contribution to cutting the Festival’s carbon footprint.
