Over the course of the weekend we managed to fill our 3m tall statue with crushed cans from inside the arena, and throughout the weekend asked festival goers to guess the number of cans we would use to fill it. The range of answers was phenomenal!
We worked with local waste contractor More Bins who did a fantastic job of separating the waste and recyclables and keeping the site clean. The proceeds from all the cans collected went to local charity Whitfield Rural Activity Centre which works with adults with mental health problems.
Each can recycled saves energy and raw materials, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. For example recycling one tonne of aluminium cans saves 9 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
So it’s fair to say that the can recycling activities over the course of the Festival made a significant contribution to cutting the Festival’s carbon footprint.
