Every Can Counts snapped up the opportunity to communicate with recyclers at the Isle of Wight Festival again this June, for the second year running.

FFollowing last year’s success, once again we ran our ‘Can you kick it’ football target challenge. Just by bringing us some empty drinks cans for recycling, festival goers got four shots at the goal with the aim of hitting each target.

With three people scoring four out of four, but only one pair of tickets to give away for next year’s festival, we were forced to run a tie breaker competition via our Facebook page. The participant whose celebratory photo received the most ‘likes’ won the overall prize – well done to Charlie Jobson who has himself two tickets for Isle of Wight Festival 2012.

Like last year we teamed up with waste management experts Biffa and local charity Haylands Farm, who were out positively picking the empty cans come rain or shine. The proceeds from all the cans collected will benefit the charity’s work with adults with learning difficulties. This year’s overall tonnages show good increases on last year’s figures: impressive considering that the Sunday was a complete washout and made can collecting very difficult!

Each can recycled saves energy and raw materials, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. For example recycling one tonne of aluminium cans saves 9 tonnes of CO2 emissions. So it’s fair to say that the can recycling activities over the 3 days of the Festival made a significant contribution to cutting the Festival’s carbon footprint.
