Those magnificent teams in their flying machines thrilled the crowds at Roundhay Park in Leeds on Sunday 17th July!
Flugtag (meaning “flying day” in German) challenges the brave and brainy to design, build and pilot home-made flying machines off a 30-foot high flight deck in hopes of soaring into the wild blue yonder…or, more often, plunging into the waters below.
This was the first Red Bull event that Every Can Counts has been involved in since the energy drink brand leader joined the programme earlier this year. We promoted recycling of the drinks cans used onsite during the day, and just like the competitors we did something creative with the cans we collected.
To fit the Leeds Flugtag theme, Every Can Counts created a statue based on the myth of Icarus, who used homemade wings to escape his prison, only to fly too close to the sun and fall back to earth. The statue, which stood 3m tall, was filled during the day with cans recycled by visitors to the event. In all 1700 cans were collected to fill the statue before they were recycled.
